Welcome to the Foal Handling Series where we are going to follow Steele, an AQHA/APHA Stud Colt that was born at Meadow Brook Stables, Alton, Nova Scotia though his daily training sessions.

3rd hoof trim.
Day 96 (18:47)
Review weaves and figure 8s – respect the pylons boundary, be aware of all parts of your body.
Day 97 (9:22)
introduce flag – walk around it (inside and outside turns), let interact with it, walking – where confident can start directly in front if unsure start off to the side, get used to movement around different parts of their body having them standing relaxed.
Day 98 (5:34)
Flag work – approach confidently, move around in all positions, get more random/add faster movement as they are more confident.
Day 99 (3:42)
Flag work – working in different areas around him to make sure he stays confident, getting bigger, faster and louder with the flag.
Day 100 (7:27)
Plastic bag flag – gain confidence with it in motion, drift with him, follow the intention of my body (energy down means stand, energy up means move your feet!).
Day 101 (5:06)
Plastic bag flag – plastic bag flag – move all around, up and over and underneath, walk all around on both sides while moving the bag, find and thresholds where unsure and work there, block to help them find the right answer if they assume the pressure means move.
Day 102 (4:14)
Plastic bag flag -more erratic movements, more speed, touch all over, build up to belly of rope on ground and work towards ground tying/liberty.

Figure 8s – be respectful of pylon boundaries, help feet always stay in motion.

Back up “L” – straightness, respect the pole boundary, use pressure to help increase respect/awareness of boundary and body movement.

Trailer loading, load confidently, stand tied, start to send on and off

Trailer loading, load confidently, stand tied in the first stall confidently, stand in the first stall respecting the boundary of where the divider will be, wait at door until asked to come off.

Vet Prep – stethoscope, lean over, eyes, ears, nose, needle prep, testicle check, umbilical check.

Trailer loading, loading confidently, standing tied confidently and having the door closed.
Day 116 (5:42)
Trailer loading, closing the partition – loads nicely, stands calmly tied, slowly close partition (if fusses/fidgets wait then continue once they relax), keep it closed while they settle, open slowly (if fusses/fidgets wait then continue once they relax).
Day 117 (4:44)
Trailer loading, close partition and door – – loads nicely, stands calmly tied, slowly close partition (if fusses/fidgets wait then continue once they relax), keep it closed while they settle, head out of the trailer and close door (if fusses/fidgets wait then continue once they relax), wait for them to settle then open, unclip then hang out in trailer.
Day 118 (8:51)
Halter prep, standing square – make sure leading/stop/stand are working, try to keep hind right foot still (if they move it back them up), downwards pressure forwards/backwards to move hind left, get it close then set by hand, set front by hand, keep the feet where you place them, introduce standing as you move around them.
Day 119 (4:51)
Introduction to ramp load trailer – approach and check it out, see what they off, step up – figure out the ramp, stand and relax come out, load off and on figuring out your feet on the ramp.
Day 120 (5:56)
Ramp load trailer – load up confidently, close partition and settle, introduce backing off trailer.
Day 121 (5:01)
Ramp load trailer – load confidently, close partition, bring up ramp, close fully in, open trailer up, back off.
